HISTORY

The History of Baltimore is unique and diverse, and it's a History that has had a significant impact on the growth of America. From the officers and soldiers of Baltimore who played major roles in the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812 and the writing of the "Star Spangled Banner" off the shores of Fort Mchenry, Baltimore has been a major player in America’s history.

The Port of Baltimore, established in 1706, with its strategic inland location, is the closest Atlantic Port to Major Midwestern populations and manufacturing centers. The Port handles 30 million tons annually of all types of cargoes from automobiles to zinc. It is the economic engine for the State employing 79,500 people and generating 1.4 billion dollars in annual revenue.

But while Baltimore has a strong blue collar flavor, it has a growing young service oriented population. New developments are growing around the harbor on old industrial sites. Obsolete office buildings are being converted  to high-end living spaces. The painted screens are still seen on some houses, and the marble steps are still being scrubbed. But it is becoming more difficult to find the screens and to see the people washing the steps.

Baltimore is moving forward while protecting its long history.
